Laika, the stray dog from the streets of Moscow, becomes the first animal launched into space. The Soviet Experiment showed that it is possible for living organisms to survive in a vastly different environment than on Earth. This was the first step in eventually sendings humans to space. Laika died from overheating a few hours after the launch.
